The monthly roundup for Windows 7 includes two fixes related to the issues in the previous releases. Previously, the Help (F1) menu was not being correctly displayed in a few applications. This issue has been addressed in the KB4480955 update. Other updates also had the same bug since they were released. The issue is expected to be fixed on various other devices with the release of the next month’s update. Additionally, Microsoft has released another bugfix related to Universal CRT keeping in view those developers that are still using Windows 7.

B4480955 known issues

Unlike various other updates that have recently been released, users haven’t report any issues regarding this update. However, Microsoft acknowledged there is a known Microsoft Jet database bug that is currently breaking down databases. The Patch Tuesday fixes that are expected to be rolled out in early February should resolve the issue. Also, on some client configurations, the network interface controller may fail to work. A workaround has been provided to fix the issue but the configurations causing this issue have not been identified yet. As a quick reminder, a lot of issues have been reported with the release of KB4480970 (January Monthly rollup). Those bugs included a problem with network shares along the issues that have been mentioned above. Hopefully, Microsoft will fix all these bugs with the upcoming release.

How to install KB4480955

Just before you plan to install the update, you first need to install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) as per Microsoft’s recommendations.  It allows the system to mitigate the potential issues during the installation process. Hence, SSUs actually work to improve the reliability of the update process.  The latest SSU (KB3177467) will automatically be available to download for those who are using Windows Update. Alternatively, you can also use the Microsoft Update Catalogue to download the standalone package for the latest SSU.

Windows 7 Versions eligible for the update

Only Windows 7 SP1 systems are eligible to receive the update. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 users have the option to access it in the Windows Update section as an optional download.   The handful of updates released this month indicate the efforts that are being done by the tech giant for resolving the issues reported by users.
