He added that Microsoft seems willing to replace Surface laptops with swelling batteries that are within three years of original purchase date. However, a good number of Surface laptops with swelling batteries might be older than three years. Thus, not all users might be able to get free replacements for Surface laptops with swelling batteries.

Microsoft remains tight-lipped

Microsoft has seemingly not provided much of a response to the battery swelling issue. Apparently, the company urges users to tell MS support if their Surface laptops have swelling batteries. If the laptops are within warranty at least, users can return them to Microsoft for free repairs or replacements. The bigger question is whether Microsoft should be prepared to replace Surface laptops with swelling batteries purchased longer than three years ago. The big M is not legally obliged to replace laptops, or other devices, that fall outside their warranty periods. Do not continue to utilize a Surface laptop with a swelling battery. Users who suspect their Surface laptops have swelling batteries should first get in touch with Microsoft to enquire as to whether it can be repaired. Unless the Surface device is still within its warranty period, however, there is no guarantee the big M will freely fix or provide a replacement for it.
