As Microsoft mentioned in the KB3172729 Knowledge Base article, the security flaw could allow attackers to go through Windows security features and gain access to a user’s computers. Therefore, it is recommended to install this update to eliminate any potential security risks. “This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow security feature bypass if an attacker installs an affected boot manager and bypasses Windows security features.” The update is already available to all Windows 8.1 users via Windows Update, but you can also download it manually from Microsoft’s site. Additionally, Microsoft also warned users who install this update that they might experience some issues when installing the patch. Potential issues could occur if a proper Servicing Stack Update (SSU) isn’t installed on your computer. In case you encounter installation issues with this update, just download a proper SSU for Windows 8.1 and the problem should be resolved. You can download a SSU for Windows 8.1 from this link. Although Microsoft is mainly focused on Windows 10 now, it won’t stop releasing these types of security updates for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 as soon as two operating systems are supported.
