Malware infections on Windows in 2017

Webroot published a security report on the malware infections on Windows in 2017, and it shows impressive results. 63% of all the files were found to be malware in Windows 7, and 15% of the malware was found on Windows 10. Potentially unwanted apps per device on Windows 10 dropped from 0.06 at the beginning of 2017 to only 0.01 by the end of the year. Every 100 Windows 10 PCs had four malware files, while every 100 PCs running Windows 7 has eight malware files.

Most businesses still prefer Windows 7

All these data make it interesting that most companies still use Windows 7 more than that latest version of the OS. At the beginning of 2017, 20% of known businesses were using Windows 10, and by the end of the year, the percentage increased to 32%. On the other hand, Windows 7 market share for businesses dropped from 62% to 54%. Windows 8 also dropped from 5% to 4% by the end of 2017. Even if enterprises find it complicated to migrate entirely to Windows 10, this is the best advice considering that the longer they stick with Windows 7, the more exposed to security issues they become.

Windows Home users’ migration

At the beginning of 2017, 62% of Windows Home users migrated to Windows 10, and by the end of last year, almost 72% Windows Home users migrated to the latest OS. Windows 7 dropped from 17% to 15% by the end of 2017, and Windows 8 also dropped from 14% to 11%. Windows XP and Windows Vista are quite insignificant at the moment with 1% and 2% percentages.

Malware occurrence statistics

Malware occurrence for Home users was 0.07% for Windows 10 users, 0.16% for Windows 7 users, and 0.17% for Windows XP. Webroot’s conclusion is that Windows 10 on business devices is more than 50% more secure compared to Windows 7 on Home devices.
